La Femme – Chelsea Kids

Bruce Milne, the happy chappy that use to serve me at Missing Link records and later started Au-Go-Go Records says “For a while there, La Femme were probably the most popular punk band in Melbourne.” Singer Chane Chane and his group were real punks. Tough western suburb kids more heavy metal than arty farty. Nonetheless they fitted in with Nick Cave’s Boys Next Door, The Models and the rest of the Crystal Ballroom/St Kilda crowd. Ironically I think their best song is called “Boys Next Door”. After their self titled album they petered out with a single on The Space Label called “Looking For A Laugh”/”No One Talks”. I would love to hear it, if anyone has a copy?

The guitarist, Brett Walker, was not from the western suburbs, he was from West Heidelberg.

I had forgotten how brilliant this was, and the fact that I still played it regularly until my turntable finally clapped out. Should be a link to this on the “I got drunk at the Crystal Ballroom * rsebook site.
